Brexit and the UK/EU future: the view from the left

Thursday 25th June -11am to 12.15pm (BST) / 12 noon to 1.15pm

Almost 6 months has passed since the UK’s formal departure from the European Union and in that time the European continent has been transformed by the coronavirus. Despite the crisis Britain’s Conservative government says that a new EU/UK relationship can be negotiated and implemented by the end of the year. It seeks divergence from the EU economic and social system but also wants a special trading relationship, which many within the UK and EU believe to be unachievable.

Meanwhile the UK Labour party has a new leadership which is instinctively pro-European but accepts that Brexit cannot be undone. The senior shadow minister Rachel Reeves MP is the party’s Brexit spokesperson and has challenged the government to present a deliverable strategy. But with four years until another British election, Labour is not yet setting out its own plans for the EU/UK partnership.

In this special online event Rachel Reeves MP will provide her analysis of the latest developments on Brexit and the future EU/UK relationship; and explain what she expects and hopes to emerge from this year’s bilateral talks. Leading social democrats from across the EU will present their own perspectives on the Brexit negotiations and provide their reactions to the view from the British left.
