Ruptures and congenital defects of post-Soviet Transformation: Genesis and Perspectives on the Russian Party System



With the announcement of the intention of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to return to the office of President, there has been much speculation in the media about the direction which Russian politics will take. This study by attempts to assess how the Russian party system got to where it is today. The paper, written back in July but previously unreleased, gives a brief history of the development of a proto-party system prior to the fall of the Soviet Union, through the Yeltsin era and through to the present Putin-Medvedev tandem.
